Summer in Japan is super hot and humid, but there are lots of fun things like summer festivals (matsuri), dynamic fireworks, beautiful sunflower fields, cool foods, and more!
Even if you are in winter right now, or summer in your country is not that hot, we are excited to share Japanese summer with you!

Watermelon washi tape
Watermelon is an essential icon for Japanese summer!
It is especially good to eat it sitting on engawa.
Engawa is veranda-like porch in traditional Japanese houses.
When cool wind goes through the backyard and wind bell rings, it’s time to enjoy watermelon.

Fireworks washi tape
Fireworks festivals are held at many places in Japan during summer.
People often shout “
Tamaya~” and “Kagiya~~” to express their excitement during the fireworks performance, even though it is not really common to do so nowadays.
At fireworks festival, there are lots of food trucks and people enjoy the atmosphere in yukata.

Sun flower decoration paper
Beautiful sunflowers cheer us up and make us more energetic even in hot summer!
Famous sunflower fields in Japan are Sayo (Hyogo), Akeno (Yamagata) and Hokuryu ( Hokkaido), but you can enjoy sunflowers in other places all over Japan, too!

Obondama

Obon is around the middle of August, and family members gather to hold a memorial services to their ancestors.
