Meet Saigetsu, a talented digital artist from Osaka

Meet Saigetsu, the talented artist that's behind the original designs included in our new stationery box! We caught up with her and asked her to share a little bit more about her work, her passion, and some advice for the aspiring digital creators among you!

Please tell us more about yourself, where you live and what you do ? 
どこに住んでいて、何をしているのかを教えてください。

I live in Suita city, Osaka, and I am an illustrator. I am also an artist who travels to many places in Japan to draw the landscapes of those places.
大阪府吹田市在住で、イラストレーターをしています。日本のいろんなところに行き、その土地の風景を描くという作家活動もしています。

How did you get interested in creating art? 
アート制作に興味を持ったきっかけは何ですか？

I was inspired by the manga I read when I was little. I wanted to draw well, so I started taking art classes after school and eventually went to art university. I focused on improving my landscape drawing skills, and as a result, my signature style has gradually become landscape illustration.
小さい頃に読んだ漫画に影響されました。絵が上手くなりたくて画塾に通い始め、美大へ行き、漫画の背景が上手くなりたくて風景を描いていたら、自然にそちらを描く方へ移っていきました。

How do you define the genre of your art illustrations? What is the idea behind the new creature illustrations present in some of your artwork? あなたのアートやイラストのジャンルは何ですか？作品に見られる新たな生物のイラストは、どのような意図で描かれているのですか？

All artwork that has clients is recognized as "illustration". When I draw as I please for my personal artistic activities, I distinguish it from my illustrations and refer to it as 'paintings'.
The peculiar creature "Omeme kazoku" that appears in my work is a character that was born during my university days, and it helps to add a mystical atmosphere to my drawings.
クライアントがいるアートワークは全て「イラストレーション」と認識しています。作家活動で自分の好きなように描く場合は「絵画」として、区別しています。作中に登場する不思議な生き物「おめめかぞく」は大学の頃に生まれたキャラクターで、自分の絵に奇妙な雰囲気を添える助けになっています。

What are your sources of inspiration for your style? 
あなたのスタイルのインスピレーションの源は何ですか？

Saigestu x ZenPop Artwork

I was influenced by CLAMP, Mizuho Kusanagi, Teppei Sasakura, and Seiichi Hayashi, among others. I also like Seitei Watanabe, Seigo Takatsuka, William Morris, and Alphonse Mucha. I originally liked Western-style architecture and was interested in Rococo and Art Nouveau, but after seeing Makoto Shinkai's beautiful depictions of Japanese scenery, I became interested in drawing Japanese residential areas. When I was struggling with drawing shapes accurately, I saw how "Heta-uma" (roughly translated as "bad-good") art can still convey a sense of completeness with loose lines, so I started to draw wobbly lines to add some sway to my art
影響を受けたのはCLAMP、草凪みずほ、笹倉哲平、林静一などです。渡辺省亭や高塚省吾、ウィリアム・モリス、ミュシャも好きです。元々洋風建築が好きでロココやアール・ヌーヴォーなどに興味がありましたが、新海誠が日本の風景を美しく描いているのを観て、日本の住宅街に興味を持ちました。また、物の形がしっかり取れず四苦八苦していた頃に、いわゆる「ヘタウマ」のゆるい線で絵が成立しているのを見て、揺らぎのある線を描くようになりました。

Tell us the steps you take to create a new piece of art? 
新しい作品を作るときの手順を教えてください。

Although all-digital artwork has become more common recently, I usually start by sketching the lineart with a pen while looking at the reference photo. Then, I scan it into my computer and add color digitally. For this particular artwork, I only used analog (traditional) methods for the line work.
最近はオールデジタルが増えてきましたが、基本は元になる写真を見ながらペンで線画を描き、それをPCに取り込んで色をつけています。今回の絵は、線のみアナログです。

What tools do you use to create your work? 
作品の制作にはどのような道具を使っていますか？

When using traditional (analog) methods for line work, I draw with a fineliner pen and then scan it into the computer. I use Photoshop to add color digitally.
線画がアナログの場合はミリペンで描き、スキャナーで取り込みPhotoshopを使って彩色します。

Please explain your concept of your artwork for ZenPop? 
ZenPopのためのあなたのアートワークのコンセプトを教えてください。

Saigestu x ZenPop Artwork

As this artwork is intended for overseas audiences, I emphasized motifs that are unique to Japan. Originally, the notebook depicted a cityscape, but I was suggested that I draw a festival food stall (Omatsuri) from the team, which allowed me to create a scene that is distinctly Japanese. I'm really happy with how it turned out.
海外へ向けてのアートワークなので、日本独自のモチーフを重視しました。
ノートは元々ビル群の風景でしたが、日本の祭の屋台をご提案いただき、日本ならではの風景を描くことができよかったです。

What is your favorite Japanese stationery item? 
あなたの好きな日本の文房具は何ですか？

What is your advice for people interested in to become artists? 
アーティストになることに興味がある人へのアドバイスをお願いします。

At first glance, a person's skill level may not be apparent in a seemingly "badly drawn" or "sloppily painted" abstract artwork. However, it is immediately clear how much effort the artist has put into depicting objects. I still have a lot to learn, so I believe that creating many pieces of artwork is very important.
一見絵がヘタに見えたり、絵の具を適当に塗った簡単そうな抽象画でも、その人がこれまでどれだけ写実を描写してきたのかは一発で分かります。私もまだまだなので、枚数を重ねることが大切だと思っています。

Tell us about some projects you want to work in the coming months? 
今後、取り組んでみたいプロジェクトを教えてください。

Lately, I've been receiving more offers to draw various cities, so I'd like to create more of those. Also, I'd like to improve the accuracy of small items such as food and plants, not just landscapes.
最近色々な街を描くお仕事をいただけるようになってきたので、もっと増やしたいです。また、風景だけでなく食べ物や植物など、小物の精度も上げていければと思います。
